Artist Statement:
Content warning – the artwork contains names and images of deceased Aboriginal people. The topic is colonialism and racism, which is explored throughout the artwork.
'That Place They Had (Part 1)' was produced and made on Gadigal and Bidjigal land. I would like to acknowledge the First Nations people, past, present and future. My work explores my Aboriginal identity through storytelling from my mother, Vicki Rose Winters Green. The use of family archives of the women in my family helped develop this piece of work.
The stories, journeys and archives highlight how all Aboriginal women’s stories have beauty and trauma due to white/colonial Australian history. It's very unsettling to fight for your identity in your own country, but my mother, her mother, my sister, and all other Indigenous people, will persevere; we will not give up, we’ll always stand strong.
I reflect on the celebration of Blacktown City's diversity through memories of growing up in the western suburbs which harbours a diversity of communities which made me feel at home as a young child.
