Bread and Longing is an exhibition of works by Open Studio artist and 2022/23 Blacktown City Art Prize finalist, Stan Florek.
Bread and Longing begins with stories discovered at a local bakery in Blacktown. Bread is the catalyst for connection, as people come to the bakery daily for their bread.
Modest, nourishing and familiar, bread passes between hands, carrying with it real and imagined stories of love, fulfillment and happiness. As stories unfurl, a deeper longing for distant relatives, friends, culture and language is uncovered.

Stan Florek is a local Blacktown artist and archaeologist born in Poland. His practice has spanned many mediums including pastel on paper, printmaking and painting.
In his recent work, Stan experiments with combining charcoal and oil paint on canvas. He greatly appreciates the formal qualities of an artwork, yet his work is almost always stimulated by and entangled in narratives
Stan has previously exhibited work in the Blacktown City Art Prize and is a regular attendee of the Open Studio program. In 2019 Stan was a recipient of the Creative Arts Fund. The resulting body of work is exhibited in this exhibition Bread and Longing.
This project is presented by Blacktown Arts supported by Blacktown City Council and the NSW Government through Create NSW.
