Blacktown Arts invites you to Blue Velvet, an evening showcase of ambient and experimental music at Common House Studio.

Curated by radio broadcaster, DJ, and curator Aeddan Cox, Blue Velvet centres listening as an act of communion through immersive soundscapes conjured by some of Sydney’s most innovative, left-field performers.

Opening the night is Sina, whose ghostly vocals and reverb-drenched guitar conjures dreamlike soundscapes at the intersection of ambient music and shoegaze.

Western Sydney experimental, ambient musician Wytchings, and experimental noise artist S.C.U.M, blend their sonic worlds together for a debut, collaborative performance, weaving the ethereal with ritualistic noise abrasions.

Musician and performance artist Marcus Whale and experimental electronic producer Grasps unite for a collaborative performance, combining their surreal, atmospheric soundscapes at the intersection of dense club sounds and hazy electronica.

Christian aka Grasps is an electronic artist and producer based in Eora (Sydney), in so-called Australia. Their sound is experimental electronic, enmeshing sounds from life and the unreal, intending to combine extremes of sound; the gentle with the harsh. Christian is also one half of agony, an electronic dance music duo known for their high energy performances.

As a solo artist, Grasps has released 2 EPs through PBDY’s LA-based label TAR; a subsidary to Brainfeeder, which received support from the likes of Flying Lotus & Huxley Anne. Their 2019 debut album Awoken was received with open arms, blessed with collaborations from visual/3Dgraphic artist Nicholas Matthew Elstran (US) as well as celebrated Eora-based noise/doom outfit Bract (fka Coward Punch). His second album when will you be here again? is out now, featuring collaborations from Marcus Whale, Wa?ste and BAYANG (tha Bushranger). A reflection on dying & the uncertainties of identity & self-worth, WWYBHA is an 11-trackdeep-dive into gentle & destructive vulnerability.

Grasps was nominated for the Sydney Music, Arts & Culture Awards presented by FBi Radio for his album when will you be here again? (Best Record) and his production work on GUILD’s Gimme Ur Love (Best Single). His album was debuted at Phoenix Central Park, an iconic Australian institution showcasing the best of local & international music, with his performances noted as having ‘transformed (the space) into a soundscape that oscillated between fragility and ferocity, enveloping the room in layers of emotive resonance’.

Grasps has produced music for local and international acts such as 1300, Rico Nasty, BKTHARULA, TeezoTouchdown, Laces (NLV Records), BAYANG (tha Bushranger), Sevy, TripleOne, GiftExchange, BBIANCA and Porcelain Boy. He has performed live in support of Yung Lean (2016), Bladee (2019), Thaiboy Digital (2019), Fatima al Qadiri (2016), Cashmere Cat (2016) and has appeared internationally at respected institutions Forest limit (Tokyo), Circus (Tokyo) and TwentyAlpha (Hong Kong) (2023). Recently, Grasps has performed at the State Library of NSW as part of their Songs of Sydney annual event. Grasps remains a long-standing host on Hong Kong Community Radio (Field of Dreams) showcasing local and international acts monthly since 2021.

Marcus Whale is a musician and performance-maker. Performances hybridise experimental music, dance and performance forms in exploring the tension and spontaneity of the performative moment, often moving off the stage and into the room.

Musically, his work tends towards the hypnotic and ecstatic, drawing from choral drone, high BPM rave music and the world-building of horror film, queer performance and religious liturgy. Albums Inland Sea and The Hunger were nominated for the Australian Music Prize and 2024 album Ecstasy won the FBi SMAC award for record of the year.

He has previously been a member of groups Collarbones (with Travis Cook) and Black Vanilla (with DJ Plead and Cassius Select/Lavurn).

S.C.U.M is a bad omen of primordial darkness that has lost her way and ended up in this so-called dimension. An aural executioner, S.C.U.M forges her own space through audio assault, piercing sonic frequencies, and abhorrent noise. An ode to magic in all its forms; women, rage, movies, community and collaboration. S.C.U.M. uses industrial materials to inflict pain upon her audience and piss people off.

Sina’s haunting voice and hazy guitar weave ethereal, dreamlike soundscapes somewhere between ambient and shoegaze. While primarily known for her work with Dregs and the project’s 2023 self-titled release, her new material moves toward a more intimate and vulnerable sonic world. Her debut solo LP is forthcoming on Glasgow label Somewhere Press later this year.
