Workshops for children, young people and families

TERM 4 2022
Creative workshops for children and families continue at The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre in Term 4.
Get ready for Family Day! Children, parents, carers and friends are invited to drop-in to The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre to join in one or all of our free activities. Play with clay, create a unique collage, make a wacky rock monster and get creative with chalk drawing. Pay a visit to our current exhibition, Dedicated to the Dedicated: Whitlam, the Arts and Democracy, and pick up a special activity book for kids. Presented with artists Skye Andrew, Mary Nguyen and Sima Alikhani.
We are also offering a special one-off kids workshop to create an artwork to enter into the Young Artist Prize. Join art teacher Elaine Butler to make a painting, drawing or collage of a body of water near where you live in response to the theme, Caring for Waterways.
Please note, our Term 4 program will be slightly shorter than usual.
The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre will be closed for the year from Tuesday 6 December.

Sima Alikhani is a trained contemporary visual artist living in western Sydney. Art is Sima’s passion and she uses her artmaking as creative therapy to help students to express emotions and reduce stress.
Sima is interested in inspiring audiences and participants to look carefully at the world around them, and to discover beauty in unusual places. Sima has valuable experience teaching art and working with local artists in the Blacktown area and has been involved in many collaborative projects involving children and families.
Skye Andrew completed a Diploma of Fine Art at the National Art School, majoring in photography and painting, and has exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Australia. She has a passion for the outdoors and loves creating art experiments alongside her primary school aged son.
Mary Nguyen is a local visual artist who works across a wide variety of media and styles. Mary exhibits regularly and is often the recipient of awards and residencies.
Mary attended the University of Fine Arts in Hanoi, Vietnam, and then completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UNSW in Sydney, which led to working with communities as an artist and teacher, and most recently workshop facilitator for Blacktown Arts. Mary’s work traverses drawing, painting, installation and sculpture and is a synthesis of culture and experiences of Australia and Vietnam.
Elaine Butler is an Irish/Australian visual artist and mobile arts educator located in both the Blacktown/Hills Area of Western Sydney and in Wallerawang, Regional NSW. With 28 years’ experience in creative education, she offers a variety of art educational programs, classes, art kits and incursions designed to be unique, therapeutic, and inspirational learning experiences for everyone young or old. She is also a Mural Artist, qualified in Art Therapy, and a children’s book author & illustrator.
