Smart Bins 2021/2022

by Phoebe Repeti

Blacktown City has invested in new solar-powered waste bins throughout Blacktown local government area. The solar-powered waste bins can monitor and compact waste levels to optimise waste collection times and are an innovative solution to improve resource efficiency for Blacktown City.

The bins have been wrapped with beautiful site-specific artworks created by artists.

The Arts and Cultural Development section focused on temporary public art commissions as part of the development of the program.

Nine local artists were commissioned to integrate their artworks into the Smart Bin design to create more welcoming public spaces. (artists below)

Several outcomes were achieved, such as improving local facilities, reducing the number of graffiti incidents and employing local creatives during the Covid-19 lockdown.
