meet me at the next stop
18 November to 3 December 2022
The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre
Blacktown Arts is proud to present our final installation for 2022, meet me at the next stop.
CuriousWorks’ latest anthology-style artwork is a mixed media installation exploring the everyday experiences of commuting and living in western Sydney.
Digital, audio and physical art pieces from CuriousWorks artists are staged on a replica bus stop, from the adverts, to the bench seats, to the bus timetables.
Featuring our very own Elder-in-Residence Uncle Greg Simms, and the talent of local creatives such as Diego Murillo, Sivani Yaddanapudi, Sandra May, Saarah Hanif, Jessica Phoebe Hanna, Miranda Aguilar, Shawn Spina and stacks more, meet me at the next stop invites you to take a break from the everyday commute and rethink your public transport journey.
Featured works:
Keys, Wallet, Mask
An audio anxiety spiral captures the ripples of impact limited transport options can have on everyday workers. The work is displayed via a ‘lost’ pair of headphones on the bench, emphasizing the mundanity of our everyday anxieties.
Bus to Bankstown
Captures the disconnect between people and places, particularly in the wake of pandemic-induced agoraphobia. Created using screen captures of everyday phone apps, Bus to Bankstown offers a glimpse into how the pandemic and social isolation has continued to weigh on our everyday actions.
Rise and Grind Inc.
A satirical examination of productivity culture through advertising. Framed as an ad for energy supplements, the advertisement’s protagonists are given no reprieve from the constant weight of hustle culture and capitalism.
Portraits of Comfort
Unpacks the phrase “struggle street” and its connection to Mount Druitt as a misnomer. Through a series of community portraits, the artists convey the idea of comforts of living in Blacktown.
