Lives and works in Bowral, NSW.
DARKpassage, 2020
Recycled PVC, sound

Part survival. Part wonder. Part lament.

DARKpassage is an installation that considers the invisible layers of place vibrating across time. The abstract forms are inspired by smooth-bark gums glinting in the moonlight reminding us this was once a richly inhabited woodland co-inhabited and cared for.

Julie Vulcan is an independent Sydney-based artist. Her practice currently sits across multiple forms with a focus on performance & installation, text & digital media and durational & site-responsive work. Informed by an interest in transience, transference and constructed histories she questions the veracity of mediated memory and the motivations behind how we remember, record and rewrite our actions, bodies and traces – past, present and future.

Current projects interrogate systems of control and constructs of the dark. Julie has created solo and collaborative performance work since 1993 including working with Squidsilo, Frumpus, Unreasonable Adults and Pacitti Company UK. Independent works have toured nationally and internationally, most recently RIMA with squidsilo at Arts House Melbourne 2016; Nocturnal Whispers at The Funeral Party Dark Mofo Hobart 2016; Holding Now (44 days) at Scratch Art Space Sydney 2016; I Stand In at Venice International Performance Art Week Italy 2014; Drift at the Festival of Live Art, Melbourne and Metro Arts, Brisbane 2014.
