2022 Blacktown City Art Prize Terms and Conditions

ARTWORK ELIGIBILITY

  • Artwork must be original work, and have been completed after 5 October 2021. Work previously submitted to the Blacktown City Art Prize is not eligible.
  • We are unable to accept film, video, sound, performance and installation artwork.
  • Eligible two-dimensional artwork can be any of the following mediums: painting, drawing, photomedia, printmaking, textiles and mixed media. The maximum size of the work allowed, including frame, is 155 cm x 155 cm (height x width). Please note that work larger than this will not be accepted.
  • Eligible three-dimensional artwork can be any of the following mediums: sculpture, mixed media, textiles and ceramics. The maximum size of the artwork allowed is 200 cm x 150 cm x 150 cm (height x width x depth) and the maximum weight is 40 kg. Please note that work larger or heavier than this will not be accepted.
  • All artworks must be available for sale, and cannot have a price exceeding $15,000

ENTRANT ELIGIBILITY

  • The Blacktown City Art Prize is open to all applicants living in Australia
  • Entrants must be aged 16 years or above on 5 October 2021
  • All finalists are eligible for the Main Prize and the People’s Choice Prize
  • The Aboriginal Artist Prize is open to entrants who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background
  • The Local Artist Prize is open to entrants who reside in the Blacktown Local Government Area. See the full list of suburbs here
  • A maximum of 2 artworks can be submitted by a single entrant, but a separate entry form must be completed for each artwork

JUDGING & SELECTION CRITERIA

  • An independent panel of three judges select finalists for the Blacktown City Art Prize exhibition
  • The panel views all entries on screen
  • The panel selects artworks for the exhibition based on the following criteria:
    • Concept
    • Execution
    • Originality
  • Prize winners and highly commended artists are selected by the judges from the exhibition
  • The decisions of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into
  • The People’s Choice Prize is by a public vote and is limited to one vote per person during the exhibition. Voting can be done in person at The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre or on the Blacktown Arts website

SALE OF ARTWORK

  • All finalists’ artwork must be available for sale in-person at the exhibition and via the Blacktown Arts website
  • The price you provide on your entry form will be the sale price of your artwork during the exhibition. If you are registered for GST, the sale price should include GST
  • A 20% commission will be deducted from total sale price. The sale price you provide should be inclusive of this commission and GST (if applicable)
  • If your artwork is sold, payment will be processed after the exhibition has closed and the buyer has paid in full. You will need to provide an invoice, and Blacktown Arts staff will contact you to arrange the paperwork. Please note that Council payment terms are 30 days after the receipt of a valid invoice

ANNOUNCEMENT OF FINALISTS & WINNERS

  • Finalists will be announced on Wednesday 27 October on the Blacktown Arts website and social media channels, and all entrants will be emailed the announcement
  • Winners of the Blacktown City Art Prize, Aboriginal Artist Prize and Local Artist Prize will be announced on Saturday 27 November 2021
  • The People’s Choice Prize will be announced within one week of the exhibition closing

MARKETING & PUBLICITY

  • Blacktown Arts, Blacktown City Council and/or the media (with Council’s permission) will use images of your artwork to promote the exhibition and future exhibitions in signage, websites, social media, catalogues and promotional material
  • If available, please add your social media handles to your application to allow the Blacktown Arts team to promote your work if you are a finalist

ENTRY FEE

  • The entry fee is $30 per artwork and is non-refundable
  • Full payment must be made at the same time as submitting the online form via debit/credit card
  • We are unable to accept cash or cheques as payment

COVID-19

  • If COVID restrictions and public health guidelines prevent a physical exhibition, a gallery of the finalists will be published on the Blacktown Arts website. Judging will take place onsite at The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre or online, in line with public health guidelines
  • If a physical or online presentation of the exhibition is not possible, the 2021 Blacktown City Art Prize will be cancelled and we will provide a full refund (less the merchant service fee) of entry fees to all entrants
  • If COVID restrictions and public health guidelines prevent artworks from being deliver or collected on the below dates, Blacktown Art staff will advise all finalists of changes via email.

SUBMITTING IMAGES

Please upload 1 image with your entry and ensure it meets the following requirements:

  • A maximum of 1500 pixels in height and width
  • JPG file format only
  • Maximum file size of 2MB
  • File name should be: ‘firstname-lastname-title.jpg’ (EG john-smith-landscape2.jpg). Please do not include special characters. (EG ~, #, &,<,?, /,“, or characters in a language other than English)
  • File name should be less than 75 characters long

INFORMATION FOR FINALISTS

  • Blacktown City Council may acquire the main prize-winning artwork for the Blacktown City Art Collection, and may acquire additional artworks from the exhibition. It will give special consideration to Indigenous artworks, local artists, and artworks that reflect Blacktown, its people, its history and its environment
  • If your artwork is chosen for the exhibition, you will need to organise delivery and collection of your artwork, including packaging, at your own cost
  • We encourage you to organise your own insurance cover against damage, loss or theft. While we take all care, we are not responsible for loss or damage to artwork, and we do not insure artworks in transit, in storage or on exhibition
  • Artworks chosen for the exhibition should be professionally presented and ready to hang or display. Works cannot be wet, damaged or exceed the dimensions noted above
  • Two-dimensional artworks must be ready for hanging using D-rings or synthetic cord if appropriate
  • Three-dimensional works must be free standing and have installation notes provided. Note that Blacktown Arts will provide exhibition furniture such as standard-sized plinths
  • Artworks must be delivered between 9 am and 5 pm on Friday 12 November and Saturday 13 November to The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre, 78 Flushcombe Road, Blacktown, NSW 2148
  • Artwork that is not sold at the exhibition must be collected in person with photo ID, unless other arrangements are made in advance with Blacktown Arts staff
  • Blacktown Arts staff will need to be notified via email if you arrange a friend or family member to deliver/collect the artwork on your behalf. The email will need to identify who will be delivering/collecting the work and they will need to show photo ID and sign the artwork in on behalf of the artist.
  • Artwork must be collected between 9 am and 5 pm on Friday 28 January or Saturday 29 January 2021 from The Leo Kelly Blacktown Arts Centre, 78 Flushcombe Road, Blacktown, NSW 2148
  • If an artwork has not been collected by Friday 11 February 2022, Blacktown Arts has permission to dispose of the artwork, if the artist has not contacted Blacktown Arts staff to arrange collection.
